What an outstanding and amazingly beautiful album by this australian band that, unfortunately, is no more. "Absence" was recorded before Snowman's demise and it was put out on the market afterwards.

I love Carla Bley, her career and her compositions in general.

Hello there!
Been a while since my last post. Works, examens, etc, etc, etc...
Well, just decided to share these awesome live recordings by one of the greatest jazz icons: John Coltrane.
They were made between the 1st & the 5th of November 1961.
Coltrane was accompanied by Eric Dolphy, Reggie Workman, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones, Ahmed Abdul-Malik, Roy Haynes and Garvin Bushell.

A few weeks ago I've exchanged some emails about the portuguese label Bor Land.
As I promised to the person in question, here's Ölga's "What Is".
Ölga is a portuguese trio from Lisbon. They were formed in 2001, although as a quartet then, and they've released four records so far.

It's a little unfair to choose one specific track from the album, but if I had to do it, I'd choose "Monument". So much powerfulness in such a short piece of time.

Ben Monder Trio - Dust (1997)

Just love this record; what a great trio!
Ben Monder (guitar), Jim Black (drums) and Ben Street (bass).
It will certainly appeal to fans of Bill Frisell or John Abercrombie.

Trio records can go one of two ways: they either become a showcase for one particular player's overwhelming talent or a dynamic conversation between three equally talented and thematically in-tune musicians.
"Dust" definitely falls in the latter category.
This isn't Monder's show per se; all three players push and pull the songs in varying directions, following no real leader.

Clarinetist Ben Goldberg gain some recognition by playing in the New Klezmer Trio, in the early 90's.
Throughout his career, he has played with many well-known musicians suh as Andrew Hill, Myra Melford, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Roswell Rudd, Wayne Horvitz, Don Byron, Ellery Eskelin, Zeena Parkins, Mark Dresser, Cuong Vu, Marty Ehrlich or Trevor Dunn, who also plays on this record.

Duplex Longa - Forças Ocultas (1992)

Unfortunately, "Forças Ocultas" was the only album by the portuguese avant-garde group Duplex Longa, formed in 1987 by Mário Resende (violin, drum machine, flutes, tapes, computer, electronics) and Carlos Raimundo (bass, drum machine, tapes, samplers, electronics).
This record has inumerous collaborations, including singer Anabela Duarte (Mler ife Dada) and the jazz musician Rodrigo Amado on the saxophone.

This is, undoubtedly, a controversial character but, to tell you the truth, I couldn't care less about Douglas Pearce's (supposed) political views.
What really interests me on him it's his music.

Scott Walker is one of my deepest influences in art and in life.
Probably my only true idol.
I can tell you that his first solo records, "Scott-Scott4", and even 1995's "Tilt", changed profoundly my points of view over pop music's history.
This is just a humble attempt to bring new ears to the music of Scott Walker.

Neil Hannon - "My favorite singer in the world ever is an american, Scott Walker."

Jarvis Cocker, about the difficulty in getting Scott's records at one time - "It took me four or five years to track them all down.
As for Scott 4, it just completely blew me away. He had massive orchestral arrangements, but with lyrics about people stuck in front of the telly, with their kids getting on their nerves. I'd always liked things that mythologized everyday life, but this was the first time I'd heard it in pop music."

Laurie Anderson, about her introduction to Scott Walker's music - "My immediate reaction was complete attention, which pretty much describes listening to him since then. His signature is a roaring big voice with ragged edges full of sharp things."

Excellent record with great pop tunes such as "I Want to Touch You", "Flower to Hide", etc, etc, etc...
This is the 2010 reissue with 6 bonus tracks.

We're having such a hot summer in here, that I thought it would be nice to post some beautiful, refreshing melodies by The Beach Boys.
Some of my favourtite tracks, such as "Keep an Eye on Summer", "The Warmth of the Sun", "Surfer Girl", "Don't Worry Baby", "Louie Louie" and "Fun, Fun, Fun", are on these two records.

Botanica - With All Seven Fingers (2002)

"With All Seven Fingers" was the 2nd studio album by Botanica, a musical project founded in the late 90's by former Firewater keyboardist Paul Wallfisch.

Paul Wallfisch has careened around the world (probably in a drunken state, but who knows) to bring all manner of experiences to bear in his music, serving as the leader of the smart and decadent alternative rock band, Botanica. Whether through a great inheritance or a savvy ability to play the stock market, the singer/songwriter was able to travel the globe, journeying to lands as diverse as Indonesia, Finland, China, and Guinea; although Botanica is far from a worldbeat band, there is a distinct air of wry world-weariness and a cosmopolitan sophistication that infuses all its songs. Upon reentering the U.S., Wallfisch set up shop in Los Angeles where he recruited drummer Ivan Knight (Stan Ridgway) and bassist/backing vocalist Abby Travis (Beck, Elastica, KMFDM); they named themselves Botanica after those mysterious little shops that stock strange spells and a myriad of religious artifacts. Michael Marcus is a jazz musician that plays inumerous types of saxes and clarinets.
Although his career was built around the free jazz genre, he spent his early years playing with blues musicians such as Albert King and Bobby Bland.
Apart from "Speakin' Out", which is a solo record, there are a lot of great musicians accompanying Marcus on the other three albums, including Jaki Byard, William Parker and Steve Swell, among others.

Two great records by the portuguese avant-garde group Telectu, founded in 1982 by Jorge Lima Barreto and Vítor Rua.
"Ctu Telectu" was the group's debut album and, undoubtedly, a landmark in the portuguese avant music scene of the early 80's.
"Biombos" is a combination of live and studio recordings made in 1992, between Beijing, Macau and Hong Kong.

Rother's electro sound ("Sex With the Machines", "Simulationszeitalter"...) is characterized by repetitive machine-like beats, robotic, vocoder-driven vocals, melancholy, futuristic mood and lyrics that often deal with the consequences of technological progress, the relationship between humans and machines, and the role of computers in society. "Sandglass" was the only album released by April Nine.
Great ambient/electronic record by this slovenian group that also appeared on the tribute to Kraftwerk, "Trans Slovenia Express", which I've posted earlier.
April Nine's sound was built around Katrin Radman's ethereal voice and the exoticism of it's compositions.

This was Smadj's 4th album.
Very interesting material that will probably appeal to fans of Talvin Singh & Co.

Jean-Pierre Smadja (Smadj) Tunisian born, Parisian musician grew up listening to Oriental, Brazilian, funk, soul, and folk music.
Entering a jazz school at age 15 due to his intense interest in the guitar, Smadj's musical development came to be characterized by transforming traditional jazz styles into eclectic sounds.
This interest in the mechanics of making music led Smadj to pursue a degree in sound engineering, which led to a fruitful career as a recording & sound engineer for famous classical and folk musicians.
Releasing his first album in 1994, it wasnt until 2000 that Smadj became recognized on an international scale for his signature blending of acoustic and electronic sounds on Equilibriste, which would ascend on the European World Music Charts to the number 4 position.
In 2002, Smadj joined fellow ud magician, French musician Mehdi Haddab, for a special project that would transport the oud to the 21st century in DuOuD.
Supporting their triumph of an album with a 2 year world tour, the album also received 2nd place in the Best Album category at the prestigious BBC World Music Awards.
In 2003, Smadj joined master percussionist Burhan Öçal for the Kırklareli İl Sınırı and in 2005 he stepped behind the scenes to serve as artistic director for Burhan Öçal's New Dream.
He recorded his last album S.O.S released in december in turkey with 2 turkish virtuosos Savas Zurnaci and Orhan Osman. (Taken from Discogs)

Brendan Perry - Live at Brussels Botanique Orangerie, 20th March 2010 (2010)

Last March 15th, a monday night, I had the privilege to witness one of the most magnificent concerts in years - Brendan Perry was in Portugal for the 1st time!
My post isn't about that particular magical moment I presenced in Braga.
In fact, this post is about a gig in Brussels, only five days later, that someone had the kindness to share on the net.
The sound quality is superb, it was directly recorded from the sound mixer.
As on his portuguese shows, Brendan played a lot of outstanding new material, which will be part of his new album "Ark" (to be released in June), along with some classic Dead Can Dance stuff.

Biosphere is, probably, the most successful project by Geir Jenssen since his departure from Bel Canto.
These were the first two albums he released under that moniker.
Great ambient-minimal-techno, hope you like it!

Fusing elements of composition derived from environmental experimentalists such as Brian Eno, Jon Hassell, and Walter Carlos with the rhythmic backbone of urban dance styles such as techno and acid house, ambient techno's popularity would grow with the popularity of artists such as the KLF, Irresistible Force, Higher Intelligence Agency; and of course Biosphere.
Jenssen's fascination with science-fiction in general (specifically, space) powers his debut album.
Welding eerie samples to house rhythms, Microgravity has a sinister quality that's refreshing compared to much ambient-house of the early '9os.
One reason why Jenssen's work stands out from the flood of early '90s ambient/techno releases is his strong sense of the quirkily creepy. Intensified by the, on the one hand, pretty, on the other, disturbing music, buried synth strings and a soft pulse accentuated by clattering noises deep in the mix, it kicks off the striking Patashnik very well.
